Lord Carey tables amendment to undermine equal marriage bill by calling for ‘two tiered’ marriage

The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, is seeking to wreck the equal marriage bill for England and Wales, by tabling an amendment suggesting that there be two “tiers” of marriage. Lord Carey has tabled an amendment which could potentially undermine the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, by redefining opposite-sex marriage as “traditional” marriage, and calling for a distinction to be made between opposite-sex and same-sex marriages. The proposed clause would read that “nothing in this Act could take away the right of a man and woman to enter a traditional marriage”. It continues: “A ‘traditional marriage’ is one where the basis of the marriage is the voluntary union of one man and one woman for life, to the exclusion of all others.” The amendment does not suggest a label for same-sex couples. The bill survived its second reading last week, as an amendment tabled by Lord Dear was rejected by 390 votes to 148. The bill comes back in committee the week commencing 17 June. It will have its report stage on 8 July and third reading on 15 July. Minister are hoping that the bill will have Royal Assent before summer recess, at the end of July. Equal marriage critic Lord Dear has proposed another, similar amendment to the Marriage (Same Sex Couples Bill), protecting those who believe marriage is “the union of one man and one woman for life to the exclusion of all others.” Earlier in June, Lord Carey, argued that marriage equality should be opposed on the grounds that allowing marriages based “merely” on love and commitment would also justify polygamous unions and weddings between siblings. In an essay titled ‘Love is Not Enough’, published by the think tank Civitas, Lord Carey argued “not all relationships are the same”. He put forward claims that marriage equality would enable incestuous marriages to take place – an argument recently given publicity by Lord Norman Tebbit, when he asked of same-sex marriage in an interview: “Why shouldn’t a mother marry her daughter? Why shouldn’t two elderly sisters living together marry each other? I quite fancy my brother!” Lord Carey, has previously accused David Cameron of creating a “broken society” through the same-sex marriage bill. Labour MEP Michael Cashman: Putin’s ‘hate speech’ has resulted in the ‘barbaric killing’ of gay Russian men

he European Parliament has adopted a resolution condemning Russian MPs for passing a draconian homophobic censorship law, with Labour MEP Michael Cashman saying “hate speech” from President Putin and others has resulted in the “barbaric killing of gay men”. Several violent homophobic killings have taken place in Russia since the start of 2013 – the most recent involving a 39-year-old man in a village on the Kamchatka. Yesterday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the “anti-propaganda” law voted in Russia’s federal Duma earlier this week. It fines anyone organising a gay pride event or giving information about LGBT issues to those under the age of 18. Members of the European Parliament noted that “[Russian] federal authorities have done nothing to stop discriminatory legislation banning ‘homosexual propaganda’ from coming into effect in nine regions of Russia”. The Parliament said it was “deeply concerned by the negative consequences of the adoption of a federal law on ‘homosexual propaganda’, which could increase discrimination and violence against LGBTI individuals”. The Council of Europe also condemned Russia’s new laws, which unduly restrict free speech in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2012, the UN Human Rights Committee ruled that these laws breached the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Russia. Michael Cashman, the British Labour MEP and co-president of the LGBT Intergroup, said: “hate speech from Putin and others had resulted in the barbaric killing of gay men”. “This is unacceptable and uncivilised. The EU must continue to systematically express its strongest opposition to laws that restrict freedom of expression”, the MEP added. The Austrian MEP Ulrike Lunacek MEP, who is also co-president of the LGBT Intergroup, said: “Not a month passes without Russia becoming less and less of a democracy. In addition to the propaganda law, the ‘Foreign Agents’ law also places undue pressure on NGOs.” “Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev are the most dangerous same-sex couple in Europe these days; the EU and the Council of Europe need to up the pressure against Russia after these terrible laws are passed.”

Son of US Senator under fire for posting racist and homophobic tweets

A US Republican Senator has come under fire after his 15-year-old son posted homophobic and racist comments on several social media sites.
Tanner Flake, son of Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, was found to have posted anti-gay slurs, as well as racism and religious slurs across Twitter, YouTube, and other social media profiles.
In one tweet, Tanner calls the thief of his dirt bike a “faggot”, and in another, he calls a friend a “Jew” for taking credit for his jokes.

Despite having now locked his Twitter account, a series of tweets from earlier this year showed that he repeatedly used the slurs, and in one he bragged about his father being a member of Congress.
In one tweet, Tanner referred to Mexicans as the “scum of the Earth”, which has caused concern with some, as Senator Flake is currently taking the lead in the broad immigration reform in the US Senate.
Senator Flake apologised on behalf of his son, and for himself, saying: ”I’m very disappointed in my teenage son’s words, and I sincerely apologise for the insensitivity,
“This language is unacceptable, anywhere. Needless to say, I’ve already spoken with him about this, he has apologized, and I apologise as well.”

PM denies protest role with threats

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday urged S-21 survivor Chum Mey to cease protesting against opposition leader Kem Sokha so the country can get back to focusing on the upcoming National Election.

Speaking at the opening of the new National Olympic Committee of Cambodia headquarters in Phnom Penh, the premier also again denied that the ruling Cambodian People’s Party had orchestrated protests against Sokha, saying that if it had then the Cambodia National Rescue Party legislator would have been sent running for refuge.

“Don’t say the government or the ruling CPP is behind this,” he said. “Do you want to taste what a protest led by the CPP would be like?

“If leaders of the CPP, especially Hun Sen or [National Assembly president] Heng Samrin, led a strike . . . Kem Sokha would not be able to stand it. He would be running to hide in foreign embassies.”

On Sunday, Mey passionately addressed a rally of about 10,000 people in Phnom Penh who had gathered to demand Sokha apologise for allegedly saying the Khmer Rouge’s S-21 interrogation facility had been faked by the Vietnamese.

Sokha has denied the allegation, saying a tape purporting to contain the comments was doctored and other remarks he made taken out of context, but has since been confronted by protesters wherever he has gone.

Hun Sen said those outraged by Sokha’s alleged comments wanted to continue protesting, but it would be in the best interests of all parties if they stopped – at least until after July 28’s ballot.

“I would like to appeal to uncle Chum Mey as well as other demonstrators to please postpone strikes,” he said. “I cannot deny their right to strike but, at the moment, I ask them to postpone their protests temporarily at least until the election is complete.”

Hun Sen, however, said he did not want to ask protesters to stop exercising their right to demonstrate altogether, but encouraged them to do it in ways that would not affect political activity.

Chum Mey said he would honour Hun Sen’s request to desist protesting – but he said he was considering legal action against Sokha as an alternative.

“Of course, we have to respect Hun Sen because he is like a parent to us. We will not protest from now,” he said.

“However, I will discuss with other victims about a plan to file a lawsuit with the court. The court can take it from there and hear the case acc-ording to the law.”

The CNRP issued a statement a few hours after Hun Sen’s speech welcoming his appeal for protesters to postpone their public demonstrations against Sokha.

“The CNRP believes that keeping the situation calm before the election will improve the atmosphere and will be a factor that encourages political stability and national reconciliation,” a statement said.

The prime minister also said opposition politicians should stop making insulting comments about the CPP during its rallies as a way of inciting ill-will against it.

“I would like to appeal to the opposition party not to use tricks or say the government has to take responsibility for everything you’ve said. You create these bad situations yourself,” he said.
